Got this Nitro Ball PCB from my friend Corrado as not working:

Nitro_Ball_PCB_

When I first fired it up I was greeted by a solid black screen.Hardware uses, like other DATA EAST games, a custom 68000 CPU in QFP package marked “59” whose pinout is unkown since no schematics are available and  nobody has yet figured it out.My first intention was to probe the RESET line on main CPU, this is the first thing I usually do when I got a totally dead board (along with CLOCK pin) but since I couldn’t I started with my visual inspection and I found this:

4.6uF_50V_lifted_pin

A 4.7uF 50V capacitor @C43 with anode terminal desoldered from its pad. This may seem a minor thing a but not in this case since this capacitor was part of the RESET circuitry along with a voltage monitor transistor (silkscreening suggests a  PST518A IC but a generic BC547 transistor was used instead in order to detect a voltage and generate a RESET signal) :

Once replaced this capacitor board properly booted but all screen was red:

A dominant red color means that blue and green ones were missing so I traced them back to three transistors:

BC547_colors_transistors

As you can see from picture above manifacturer/assembler used three compatible BC547 transistors compared to original silkscreened part adapting their different pinout by rotating them and twisting the base and collector legs. This caused a short circuit between the base and collector of the blue and green (TR2 and TR3 on picture) transistor. After clearing the short colors came back to normality.

No  further issues were found on PCB so I could declare this one 100% fixed.

Today, after repaired it, I dumped the five PAL16L8 on a DATA EAST Nitro Ball PCB (released in Japan as “Gun Ball”).They all match the ones from Dark Seal 2/Wizard Fire PCB except for the one located @K5 (no labels were on all PALs).Dumps have been tested as working in GAL16V8 targeting devices.I also reorganized these shared Data East PALs renaming them generically (like we  already done for Konami and Taito PLDs).

As announced some days ago, we have another (and  last) dump from Olivetti Prodest PC1-HD (the hard disk version).Binary dump of original PAL16L8 device was provided by José G. (JP-Retro ,JOSÉ GONÇALVES E PAULO SOUSA Group) and we took care of reversing its equations into a GAL16V8 replacement.Dump has been tested as working by José G, thanks to him and all other guys of Olivetti Prodest group.

In the past days me and Porchy were contacted by José G. (JP-Retro ,JOSÉ GONÇALVES E PAULO SOUSA Group). They are a group of  “aficionados” of Olivetti Prodest PC1, a vintage home computer released in the 1988.You can read more about it  here:

https://www.seasip.info/VintagePC/prodestpc1.html

There is a Facebook group as well:

https://it-it.facebook.com/OlivettiProdestPC1

He asked us for some help to reverse some secured PLDs (PAL16L8) present on the motherboard of  his Olivetti Prodest PC1-DFD (double FDD version) :

Olivetti Prodest PC1-DFD

So, we suggested him to build a simple adapter (designed by Charles MacDonald, all credits to him) to read them as 27C020 EPROM in a regular  programmer:

27C020_adapter

He succeeded to get the proper binay 256KB dumps so we took care to analyze them and reverse their equations into GAL16V8 replacement devices.Dumps have been successfully tested by José G.

Thanks to him and long live to the Olivetti Prodest PC1!

P.S.

There is a third PAL to be dumped and reversed , this one comes from the HDD version of Olivetti Prodest PC1:

Olivetti Prodest PC1-HD

Chip is on the way to be delivered to José G. so stay tuned for further update.

Today, after repaired it, I dumped the four PAL16L8 on a Major Title PCB (which runs on IREM M82 hardware). The one marked “MT_A-2H-” @IC5 has same equations of the ‘M81_A-2H-‘ dumped (and tested) by Porchy from a M81 X-Multiply PCB, all other ones seem to be exclusive to this game but could be also shared with other IREM games. All dumps have been successfully tested in GAL16V8 replacement devices.
